Tomatoes, in the current winter crop

The demanding tomato, in the varieties of kitchen and salad tomato, will occupy 450 hectares in the winter crop that started in Matanzas. This type of vegetables, which is the favorite for lots of people, must supply the canning industry and contribute appreciable quantities for the commercialization of fresh fruits in agricultural markets.

Tomatoes belong to the family of solanums, which also include pepper, eggplant and potato. It Is the most popular crop due to its acceptance on the table by most of the Cuban families.Its optimal development demands sun, mineral nutrients, irrigation, and attention against plagues and diseases. It is a vegetable with a high commercial and alimentary value. In Cuba, it has been chosen the use of biological compounds to achieve healthy and organic food.

Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C and E and possess a high content of potassium. They must be eaten ripe and can be refrigerated. They are exquisite for the elaboration of puree and sauces used in Cuban traditional cuisine.
