The Matanzas memory in hands of women

Gloria Machado León 23 noviembre, 2013

The award Memories of the City was given to Carilda Oliver Labra and Alicia Garcia Santana in an evening party celebrated at La Ermita de Monserrate. In the event, the magic and mysticism that emerge from great human beings prevailed.

“This distinction, awarded for the first time to two women, is one of the kind because the design is different for each winner”, explained Ercilio Vento Canosa, Historian of Matanzas City and designer of the prize.

Even though the Girlfriend of Matanzas couldn’t attend the activity because of her health condition, many of her poems were performed by actors of ¨Papalote¨ Theater to honor her.

Alicia Garcia Santana, with a PHD in Art Sciences, and who is from Havana, received with emotion several presents from different institutions of Matanzas that highlight the contribution of his work.

“With so many compliments, what comforts me the most is the fact of considering me from Matanzas”, said the author of the book Matanzas: ¨The Athens of Cuba¨, with tears on her eyes.

This activity was part of the festivity for the Memories, held every year by September the 21st. This day was internationally declared for the fight against the Alzheimer and it was turned into the ideal scenario to claim the rescue of Matanzas’ heritage, which has been the center of attention of both honored women.
