A cultural gala was held last Saturday at the Velasco movie-theater, in the city of Matanzas, to commemorate the entrance of the victorious entrance of the Freedom Caravan to the city of Matanzas on January 7th, 1959.

On a rainy night the Matanzas town met in the Parque de la Libertad to welcome 60 young people from different social sectors who reedited the tour of the Rebel Army with Fidel Castro to the front.

In Matanzas the date was remembered with the performances of Danza Espiral, the repentistas Lázaro Godoy and Paco Fundora and the troubadour Orlando Pérez Casuso. Also included in the show were Liudmila de los Santos, actress from the Icarón Matanzas group, Mercedita Isla and a quintet of art instructors from the municipality of Los Arabos.

The main words of the meeting were the first secretary of the Union of Young Communists in Matanzas, Yannara Concepción Domínguez, who said that it is up to the young to maintain the historical legacy of the Cuban Revolution and defend the achievements of the revolutionary process.

The passage of the caravan in its edition of 2017 acquires greater significance as it is the first time it is not physically commanded by the historical leader Fidel Castro, who died on November 25th last, and is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and Of the landing of the Granma yacht.

In this same framework, in the Hall of Protocol of the Government, old Town Hall of Matanzas, 50 directors of organizations stamped their signature on behalf of the workers and the Matanzas population with the commitment to contribute from their jobs with the strategies defined in the Matanzas 325 Plan , based on the restoration and conservation of the Matanzas city, with a view to the 325th anniversary of its foundation in 2018.
