More than 29 thousand 400 tonnes of potatoes were harvested in the province of Matanzas this season, a figure that exceeds the planned 300 thousand tonnes, said Yosbel Tejera Guinart, agricultural subdelegate in the territory.
The average yield is 23.8 tons per hectare. However, there are still 2,000 hectares to be harvested, so the figure will rise, he added.
Ernesto Jiménez, producer of the Credit and Services Cooperative Ramón Rodríguez Milián, in the municipality of Perico, has the best performance in the tuber campaign, exceeding 34 tons per hectare.
The results are largely due to the attentions to the crop in terms of fertilizers and state of the art technology.
“It is true that we presented a slight delay in transportation due to problems in the hiring of cargo vehicles and because the production volumes exceeded what was expected,” said Tejera Guinart.
The campaign can be described as satisfactory, compared to 2016, when only 18,000 tonnes of potatoes were produced.
However, this year the Sexto Congreso Cooperativa de Producción Agropecuaria, in the municipality of Colón, averaged only 15 tons per hectare, one of the lowest yields in the country, which represents a deficiency.
The harvest will continue until next Saturday, because the Basic Units of Cooperative Production El Sordo, Gispert, El Roque and Calimete are still to be finished.
