The use of scientific and technical knowledge in favor of the diversification of tasks linked to the food program, the increase in exports, the substitution of imports and the care of the environment led to the Agroindustrial Company Victoria de Girón, of Matanzas, receiving the Condition of Innovative Entity granted by CITMA.
Located in the southern municipality of Jagüey Grande, the workers of the Victoria de Girón -unit with 50 years of experience in the citrus activity-, become national leaders in the application of strategies to improve plant breeding and thus coexist with the plague that globally attacks citrus varieties, without diminishing yields.
According to Yisel Sosa Sánchez, development director of the entity, within these practices the localized irrigation system stands out; the increase in plant density per hectare; Effective control and recovery of investment expenses from the fifth year.
These are joined by innovators’ successes, such as the rescue of the mechanical transportation system for the industrial harvest; the habilitation of the pineapple processing line, of the Tevas towers to operate the concentrator; the repair of the condensate pump of the aseptic line and the reestablishment of the paddle heat treatment equipment for export.
Based on results like these in the company, we also advance in the production of charcoal, of vegetables in areas of protected crops; in the livestock activity and the processing of juices, puree and oils of fresh fruits free of chemical substances.
The Agribusiness Company Victoria de Girón, of Matanzas, born of an idea of the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, that also the Commander of the Revolution Felix Duque Guelmes made reality in those stony lands, assumes approximately 80 percent of the Cuban citrus production.
