Patrimonial management of Cárdenas is renewed

Gloria Machado León 22 marzo, 2018
The city of Cárdenas turned 190 on March 8 last. Almost two centuries scream at us from the walls of the buildings, where over the years it becomes laments or sounds of cars scratching the asphalt.

Being a land of stories can become a hotbed of mixed passions, unforgivable forgetfulness and frantic claims when the present and the future are far from the memory of the squares, when the march advances with accelerated roads and we have lost the direction that our parents and grandparents.

A groan of traditions feed the feeling of these cobbled streets with excesses of culture, of the good art of their children, of that admirable and nostalgic mixture that takes place between the traditional of a town built on the sugar, port and railroad development and the airs of modernity. This city, founded by the Spaniards in 1828, was characterized in its time as one of the most prosperous in the central area of Cuba.

In order to do justice to so many cultural and social values contained in the Flag City, a branch of the Office of the Conservative of Matanzas was recently created there. Several prestigious specialists form part of a multidisciplinary team, under the guidance of María Teresa Clark.

According to the teacher, there are many challenges that history imposes on the branch, challenges at the height of a beautiful city, whose value transcended having become an important economic emporium.

“The existence of Offices of the Curator and the Historian in the provinces of the country have allowed cities such as Santiago de Cuba, Camagüey, Holguín, Havana to ensure the conservation and safeguarding of essential elements for the heritage and history of the nation. In the case of Matanzas, the time it took to have an entity of this type has led to the deterioration of the real estate of the historic center.

“In Cárdenas the situation is similar. In both cases, it is necessary to preserve its history, even more if we take into account the importance of these territories within the economic, social and cultural development of the country. “

Cárdenas not only stands out for its impeccable urban layout, qualified by specialists as regular, peaceful and of the utmost order, but also because most of the houses built in the oldest part of the city are, generally, of a single very spacious floor in sense parallel to the street.

The wealth that Cardenenses accumulated during the period allowed them to build theaters and high schools, found economic, social, cultural and charitable societies of the first order and provide Cárdenas with a fair reputation as a well-educated and enlightened population and nicknames such as the Netherlands. America, the American city or the Barcelona of the Antilles.

“An identity element of the city and all of Cuba is La Dominica, where the national flag was first hoisted on the homeland on May 19, 1850 and, although it did not come as a direct daughter of independence, it was adopted. in the Assembly of Guaimaro, in 1869, as it teaches of the Cuban nation in arms.

“As many other times the building is in the middle of a restoration, whose designer is the prestigious architect from Buenos Aires Augusto Bueno. But La Dominica is not the only exponent of the heritage of the City of First Fruits, as it may seem at times.

“Fundamental are the Oscar María de Rojas museums, the Battle of Ideas, founded by Fidel in the building that belonged to the Fire Department, the Birth House of José Antonio Echeverría, the Parochial Church and the cinema, which is a sample of the style modernist. Truly Cardenas has a valuable built and immaterial heritage. “

The intention is to develop, in the long term, a collective strategy for the rescue and conservation of architectural, historical and patrimonial values with the creation and intervention of subsidiaries in the municipalities of the province, whose wealth requires it.

Cárdenas was the first to make this experience a reality that will extend to Colón and Unión de Reyes shortly. “The Office’s projections focus on achieving conservation of what can be rescued or restored; that the historic center becomes the emblematic element needed by Cardenenses and history, that preservation is achieved thanks to the efforts of all.

“The city is a loan that future generations have given us, it is not only ours, but our children and grandchildren and therefore we must preserve it. We will work on that basis, focused primarily on its development. “

Cárdenas is also known as the city of cars, crabs and bicycles, the Pearl of the North and the City of First Fruits, with the existence of more than a hundred events that occurred there before anywhere else, among which the foundation of the first Museum of Natural History of Cuba and the installation of the first railway line in Matanzas.
