The population aging and the low birth rate are the great demographic challenges of Cuba, where more than 20 percent of the current population has or exceeds 60 years of age.
From the implementation of the policy of attention to population aging, the Ministry of Public Health promotes a close relationship with other organizations and prominently are the Defense of the Revolution Committees and the Cuban Women Federation.
In particular, as regards the elderly, the results of this program include the reduction of accidents. Likewise, the attention to ailments such as ulcers or bedsores, to which is necessary to increase the training of the assistants who work directly with the nurses in the care of elderly patients.
And in that sense, it becomes more important to exploit other potentials offered by the Ministry of Public Health through the Grandparent’s houses with the day service and integral rehabilitation, whose fundamental objective is socialization.
In the Third Age, the health status of this group is prioritized, as well as the determination of risk factors, the prediction of disabilities, economic and material security, and social and family protection.
This emphasizes the recognition of their participation and well-being in the different spheres of life.
