Tamara Caridad Mesa González 12 enero, 2019

The first vice president of the Councils of State and Ministers Salvador Valdés Mesa verified, in visit to the city of Matanzas, the fulfillment of the indications addressed to the provincial Delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture in previous meetings.

The province, with the task of producing food for its inhabitants, industry, tourism and the capital of the country that cares for more than two million inhabitants, must solve deficiencies in direct contracting to producers. It is estimated that about 25 percent of the peasants do not have relations with the State and in other cases that link is not properly managed.

In this regard, the municipality of Colón stands out, while Jovellanos and Jagüey Grande, the latter one of the most productive territories in the country, are lagging behind. However, the amount of productions agreed for 2018 grew with respect to those obtained the previous year.

We also addressed the weaknesses in the collection and distribution, which determines the diversion of products and the increase in prices. This situation should improve with the supply of about 30 trucks, more than 15 trailers and five tractors. They also received about 130 different caliber weights.

Valdés Mesa explained that, by trend, costs increase, however, the wage remains, hence the need to generate more and more wealth to increase the monetary remuneration of work.Regarding municipal self-supply, a strategy that pursues the production of 30 pounds per capita in the year of vegetables, viands, grains and fruits, the main deficit is found in plantain and cassava crops.

In this meeting also emerged that livestock can achieve the challenge of providing five kilograms of meat per capita annually despite constraints such as lack of breeding stock and deterioration of sheep and goats.

After the work meeting attended by producers, representatives of the base business units, the National Association of Small Farmers and the credit and services cooperatives, among others, Valdés Mesa toured the El Bosque state agricultural market, People’s Council New Town. In the place he spoke with people about the quality of the products, their cost and the attention of the workers.

Attending the meeting were the member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and its first secretary in the province, Teresa Rojas Monzón, and the president of the Assembly of People’s Power in Matanzas, Tania León Silveira.
