The project “In the wings of a hummingbird”, is a community, institutional and educational experience that supports the project of integration, intervention and sociocultural transformation Afroatenas, in the neighborhood of Pueblo Nuevo.
Afroatenas develops, as part of the actions of training and cultural intervention in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood, a novel project that involves a work program with children, youth and adolescents of the school for special education Franklin Gómez de la Fuente. The main focus of this integration is directed to the treatment of the key subjects for the improvement and the ways of assimilation of knowledge in children with mental disabilities and other medical pathologies.
A work program aimed at these children with disabilities and mental illnesses is also carried out with tasks aimed at the physical-motor development of students and their spiritual improvement, both in the order of the intellect and in its activation and inclusion in the activities of the family environment.
To achieve this integration, the project also includes the work of parents and family members of children with disabilities, where, through the results of practical diagnoses and action-participation, a series of indicators are obtained and worked on by the faculty of teachers.
Yoelkis Torres Tápanes, director of the Afroatenas project, in the neighborhood of Pueblo Nuevo, said that this work meets the demands of the Matanzas Provincial Education Office in its struggle for improvement within the educational institution and that this school, today Today, it is one of the first centers in Matanzas to experience this educational improvement.
The main function of these hummingbird wings that flutter with impulse and hope in this center becomes to provide these boys with the necessary tools for their future development and inclusion in the social environment.
Torres Tápanes also explained that marked objectives are taken into account, among them the collaboration of the third year students of the socio-cultural management career for development, of the University of Matanzas. The members of the management and coordination group of the Afroatenas Project work are currently engaged in the conception of strategies to improve the functioning and perfection of the abilities of these children.
Work is also carried out on the physical and environmental improvement of the educational institution, located on San Juan de Dios street, in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood, in the yumurina city. In this case, the action was planned with plastic artists and art instructors. This school is nourished by cultural presentations in all the manifestations.
At present, the artist from Matanzas, Roberto Braulio, performs a beautiful work together with these children and will present it at the next Havana Biennial, achieving an impact, not only in the national sphere, but also outside the Cuban context.
“Wings of a hummingbird”, is an example in these days of the struggle of our institutions for a culture of peace, free of stigma, discrimination or any type of differentiation or violence and its campaigns, which have been going on for more than five years in the whole Island.
