Dayana Alfonso Mas and Diane López Cruz taekwondo do Matanzas will compete from this Wednesday in the National Taekwondo Championship, which began a few days ago in the province of Granma.

Alfonso, multi-prized in school and youth events, will try this time to impose on the most experienced of the fight, in the division of 67 kg, to achieve a medal that contributes to improve the general location of the province compared to last year.

Precisely, in 2018, Taimí Castellanos Estrada, from Santiago de Cuba and the Lisbeylis Ferrán Barani, from Matanzas, who won one of the bronzes, won in this race.

Diane López will premiere in the poomsae, a modality that consists of an individual imaginary combat of taekwondo. The test for the second consecutive edition is included in the national appointment, so it is one of the biggest attractions of the event in conjunction with the presence of the new monarch of the world Rafael Alba.

Although the poomsae arrived in Cuba about five years ago, it was only inserted in 2018 as part of the championship.

In the male sector, which concluded the bouts of the team section last Sunday, Santiago de Cuba retained the title while Havana and Camagüey, occupied the second and third place, respectively.

The location of the Matanzas delegation in the previous appointment was the twelfth place, although they achieved gold and bronze medals, however bearing in mind that in the male branch the two athletes summoned by Matanzas did not finally appear, the results must be lower.

It was at the Central American Games of Barranquilla in 2018, where the poomsae made its competitive debut in our region, on that occasion Cuba was not represented.

Taking into account the proximity of the Pan American Games of Lima 2019, this contest will surely influence the selection criteria to form the team that will represent the Island in this event in the region.
