Matanzas personalities deserve Distinction for Cuban Culture.

In recognition of his decisive contributions to the strengthening of national identity, historian Clara Enma Chávez Álvarez, composer and choral director Zelaida Menéndez Montero and musician Carlos Hudson Leonard received the Distinction for Cuban Culture in a ceremony held at the Concert Hall José White, from the city of Matanzas.

The vice minister of the Ileana Flores branch read the resolution of the Ministry of Culture that endorses the granting and which highlights the career of the honoree who, from their areas of influence, contribute to the spiritual development of the nation.

The delivery was part of the closing of the day for the Day of the Historian, an event that recalls the appointment of Emilio Roig de Leuchesenring as Historian of the City of Havana, and also celebrated the 37th anniversary of the Matanzas branch of the National Union of Historians of Cuba (UNHIC).

On the occasion, fundamental people and institutions were honored in the work of the professional association, including the notorious researcher Ligio Barrera Kahli, who won the Antonio José Valdés provincial award.

In the same way, Lourdes Núñez, who exhibits a solid research work, and Maricela Velasco, for the efforts dedicated to the protection of heritage, deserved the Emilio Bacardí diploma.

Clara Enma Chavez and María Teresa Paula Terry, pedagogues of extensive and remarkable performance, were awarded the Emilio Roig diploma. The journalist Yaisa Fraguela, of TV Bandera, telecenter of the municipality of Cárdenas and the student Adrián Álvarez Chávez with the diploma Pablo de la Torriente Brau, were also awarded. Also the university professor Oscar Piñera obtained the Julio Le Riverend diploma in attention to his results in the teaching of history.

Likewise, the sustained work of the UNHIC grassroots associations in the territories of Jagüey Grande, Cárdenas, Colón, Calimete and Martí was gratified.

In his speech, the president of UNHIC Jorge Luis Aneiros highlighted the future of the Yumurian subsidiary which he valued as a badge for his usual actions that have allowed the inauguration of basic sections in all municipalities and bringing together about 300 members.

The highest authorities of the Communist Party of Cuba and the Government in the territory attended the event. Present also personalities of the Matanzas  culture.
