The delegation of athletes who represented Matanzas in the eighteenth edition of the Pan American Games, held in Lima, Peru, was received this August 1th4 in this city by the political and governmental authorities, as well as by the Matanzas people appointment in the park of La Libertad.
The group of 29 young people came home with six gold medals, the same number of silver and two bronze to share with Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo the first place in the provinces in terms of the number of gold medals conquered.
In this regional event, competitors from ten Matanzas municipalities participated in thirteen disciplines, highlighting the actions in boxing, judo and air gun shooting.
Precisely, of them, Andy Cruz, the charismatic 64 kg boxer, was in charge of speaking for the delegation:
“It was an event where the competitive level was very high, very demanding, it was a very organized venue, a public that strongly supported our representatives and you could appreciate that we gave everything for everyone to contribute their grain of sand to the result of the province and from Cuba, fundamentally.
“I want to take the opportunity to thank the relatives of the athletes, to the top management of the province and the country for the unconditional support that we always receive from you and on my behalf and that of each of my colleagues, I say that we will continue giving ourselves so that follow or proud of us. ”
In thanks to that, Marieta Poey, vice president for the administration body said:
“The most important thing is the medal of dignity that you gave us because she is in correspondence with her achievements and the sacrifice made by the Cuban State for each of her children. This success of you is also a way to honor the undefeated Commander in Chief and the passion with which he defended the practice of sport: To you, congratulations”.
And of that happiness that is experienced when exchanged with family, friends, neighbors, followers of the sport and people in a general sense, the two-time gold medalist in air gun shooting, Liana Pérez Fagundo, commented:
“Everyone looks very happy, happy, the reception of the people has been magnificent and the authorities of the Party, the Government, institutions such as INDER and the CDR, have offered us a very warm welcome, as brothers.

Antony Santa Cruz de Oviedo Carvalleda and Orlanier Rolo García, members of the team that reached third place in the Baseball U-12 World Championship, held from July 26 to August 4 last, in Tai Pei, could not escape that reception program from China.
