Calixto García, pride of his people.

Tamara Caridad Mesa González 31 agosto, 2019

There are men who leave imperishable traces in their contemporaries and are transmitted to the later batches of life as a legacy of ideas to act for a better country.

Born in the humblest of families, otherwise numerous, he had to be welcomed into another home, that of his godfather.

His first studies were in a rural school near Guachinango, in Los Arabos. After reaching the eighth grade in Colon and starting as an agricultural teacher in Matanzas, he finished his studies in Havana.

In 1949, back to his homeland, he dedicated himself to the veneer to survive. He went again to the Cuban capital, like other young people, to the capital university, before the coup d’etat of March 10, 1952.

His first revolutionary contact was with Ñico López, for which he met the eternal Commander in Chief.

Participant in the assault on the Bayamo barracks on July 26, 1953, after which he travels to Arab soil and Havana, again and again, given the persecution of tyranny, enters the Uruguayan embassy and moves to Costa Rica , where he meets Che Guevara.

He was part of the courageous Granma expeditionaries, the original core of the Rebel Army and the Caravan of Freedom.

After 1959 the Brigadier General of the Revolutionary Armed Forces: Calixto García Martínez, was Head of the Army and the Military Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, among other responsibilities.

Today 1st. September marks the nineth anniversary of the death of who, endowed with the greatest humility, is a paradigm of Cuban youth and pride of his people.
