At a press conference on Friday morning at the Teatro Sauto de Matanzas, Viengsay Valdés, first dancer of the National Ballet of Cuba (BNC) explained that the company will pay special tribute to its director and founder Alicia Alonso this Friday and that this It will be the first tribute to the cousin Ballerina Assoluta of Cuba post mortem.
In an emotional moment that allowed to see tears in the eyes of Valdés, still dejected before the loss, the dancer said that the BNC decided to maintain its commitment to the Sauto Theater and the Matanzas public.
According to Radio 26, the show will open with Las Sylphs, a piece that began the company’s repertoire in its inaugural period, in 1948 and that this time Claudia García will interpret as the company’s principal dancer.
The BNC will also interpret the duet Muñecos, choreography by Alberto Méndez. Viengsay Valdés, along with also the first dancer Dani Hernández, will dance in the wood of Sauto the final pas de deux of Our Waltzes, the work par excellence of Vicente Nebrada, the most universal Venezuelan choreographer.
The gala will culminate with Celeste, creation of the Belgian-Colombian choreographer Annabelle López Ochoa exclusively for the Cuban company.
Valdés said that next year, when Alicia Alonso’s centennial of life is commemorated, the BNC will have a national and international projection with exchange programs, master classes, conferences and dance presentations.
The first dancer Dani Hernández, spoke with the press about the male presence in this national ensemble of world prestige and said that “Alicia managed to distinguish ballet by male dance and dance as a couple, is one of the strengths that bequeathed with Alberto and Fernando Alonso. “They also announced that the theater will be a sub-venue of the International Ballet Festival of Havana and that the Matanzas will be able to see the first international figures dance during this cultural eventuality.
Viengsay publicly apologized to all Matanzas for the inconvenience caused, since the function on Saturday October 19 is suspended. The Matanzas, lovers of good art and faithful defenders of the national culture reaffirmed to the ballet their support and unconditional understanding of the company in the face of such an irreparable loss.
In the portals of the Matanzas Coliseum they will have a book of condolences so that the public and lovers of ballet and good art can express their feelings about the unfortunate loss.
The ballet students of the artistic education in Matanzas participated this morning in a meeting with the dancers, and there they enjoyed the mastery of Valdés and the rehearsal exercises of the dancers on the stage of Sauto.
After the show, the BNC will return to Havana, to continue paying tribute to Alonso on October 19, at the Alicia Alonso Grand Theater in Havana, the scene of many dances of the dancer and the company itself.
