With the collection of 2,025.5 tons of honey, the province of Matanzas imposes a new production record and is ratified as the best territory in Cuba in 2019.
According to the director of the Apicultural Base Business Unit (UEB), Lorenzo Jesús Falcón, this is the result of the effort of all productive forms.
“The cooperative and peasant sector contributed about 90 percent of the production and highlights municipalities such as Los Arabos, Colón, Perico and Pedro Betancourt. We must also highlight Jagüey Grande for the volume collected in the Basic Units of Cooperative Production and the Credit and Service Cooperatives Félix Duque and Wilfredo Díaz ”.
118 producers are involved in this area, 45 of them exceeding one hundred kilograms per hive, a figure that represents a record in the province.
The Victoria de Girón Credit and Services Cooperative is also maintained as the best in yields and efficiency and the farmer Rogelio Marcelo Fundora once again dominates the beekeeping activity.
The head of production of the aforementioned UEB, Rubén Lugo Tanquero, reported that other indicators such as propolis, wax and queen bee rearing are met. He also stressed to Radio 26 the importance of the new record.

The results are due to the excellent climatic conditions that favored the essential blooms for the production of nectar.
This year the scientific-technical attention was prioritized to the producers so that they took advantage of the transhumance and the change of queen, to give health and strength to the hives.Honey bees are quoted in the international market with a minimum price of 1,680 dollars a ton, but the financial restrictions of the US blockade on Cuba limit the sector.
