Less than one hundred hectares remain to conclude potato planting in the province of Matanzas, which must end before the current January 10, according to Lázaro Bello Rodríguez, agricultural sub-delegate.
The delays are due to the effects on land preparation, fuel delivery and burned transformers, said Bello Rodríguez.
The backward productive forms in agricultural work are the Basic Units of Cooperative Production La Angelina and October 10, from the municipalities of Perico and Jagüey Grande, respectively.
The rest of the units finished the activity and the plantations denote a good vegetative state. From this moment on, the most critical period begins, the director added.

For this campaign, the planting of 1,800 hectares was estimated and it is expected to achieve 38 thousand tons, six thousand more than the previous year, with yields exceeding 17.5 tons per hectare in c and 22.5 in the imported one.
The cultivation of the tuber in the province of Matanzas is concentrated in the municipalities of Perico, Colón, Calimete, Martí, Jovellanos and Jagüey Grande.
Historically in the Havana-Matanzas Plain, potatoes are planted in the so-called winter season due to the low temperatures of the area, the low rainfall and the nutrient richness of their red ferralitic soils.
For decades the country has prioritized this important crop and every year invests considerable financial resources for the nutritional value and productive potential of the tuber.
According to scientists and evidence, the origin of the edible tuber is established in the year 8000 BC in the Andean highlands.
