The Union of Writers and Artists in Matanzas will offer a cantata for National Culture Day, at 4:00 pm in the José White concert hall, in which a select cast of creators from the province will participate.
In the first instance, the Chamber Choir stands out, led by maestro José Antonio Méndez, who will sing our glorious National Anthem at the opening. Under the artistic direction of Alfonsito Llorens, the soprano Lucelsy Fernández, the troubadours Lien Rodríguez and Reynaldo Montalvo, the actor Gilberto Subiaurt, the writer Israel Domínguez and repentista poets will perform.
The groups include the Papalote and Las Estaciones theater, the Atenas Brass Ensemble quintet, the Danza Espiral company, the Mestizaje jazz group and Los Muñequitos de Matanzas.
Entry will be by invitation. Among the events organized by the Provincial Directorate of Culture, this will be a luxury show, on the occasion of October 20th, this afternoon in the José White room of the Athens of Cuba.
But what does October 20th mean for Cubans? Is it an anniversary just to celebrate for the artists? A good Cuban knows that on this date the moment when La Bayamesa was sung for the first time in 1868, an anthem composed by the patriot Perucho Figueredo, a member of the troops commanded by the Father of the Nation, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, is remembered when The fight for the Independence of Cuba begins and the insurgent forces take over the people of Bayamo.
That musical piece became the National Anthem and is venerated as a symbol of the most sacred of the nation along with the flag of the lone star, the shield, the tocororo and the butterfly flower. It was the historical moment in which the Culture and the Nation were fused in an indestructible bond.
Our people elevate Marti’s axiom as a motto: «The mother of decorum, the sap of freedom, the maintenance of the Republic and the remedy for its vices, is, above all else, the propagation of culture.»
We celebrate an event that in 2020 is carried out under complex conditions with the maximum objective of preserving the heritage wealth.
These are times of a global pandemic, of fierce imperialist harassment, but for us they are moments of audacity, of will, of efforts in the face of adversity.
