If you want to know the history of Matanzas in these six decades of the Revolution, you have to go, necessarily, to the pages of the weekly Girón, where the triumphs and setbacks, the difficulties and victories are contained, in that event that falls in love and becomes memorable when validate the development of socialism in the province and the Cuban nation.
The gala for the 60th anniversary of its constitution, staged at the Sauto Theater, paid tribute to founders, directors and journalists who for years have offered their talent with messages of full support to Fidel, Raúl and this generation of followers.
Since its inception, the newspaper became a successor to Adelante Revolucionario, which emerged on November 22nd , 1960, when four private publications that existed in the city of Matanzas were nationalized. With the advance of time, it has become a symbol of the flat press of the territory and a reflection of Cuba’s great victories over imperialism.
At the event, a congratulatory letter was read and delivered on behalf of the Ideological Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba to the current director, Adonis Subit Lamí, who declared that «the commitment of the Girón Newspaper is with the truth and the Revolution.»
The founders José González Rivas, José Martí National Journalism Prize, Reynaldo González Villalonga, Miguel Alfonso Pintado and Juan González Pérez received recognition.
The first secretary of the Party in Matanzas Liván Izquierdo and Governor Mario Sabines attended, accompanied by Ricardo Ronquillo, national president of the Union of Journalists of Cuba and members of the Provincial Bureau of the Party and the UPEC in the province.
In addition, some of the directors who were in front of the publication from the 1980s to the mid-2020s were congratulated: Domingo Horta, Clovis Ortega and Miriam Velázquez. Likewise, the mass organizations and the Provincial Center for the Performing Arts presented the group with diplomas and distinctions.
At the gala, under the artistic direction of the choreographer Yadiel Durán, the pianist Hilda Elvira Santiago, students of the Alfonso Pérez Isaac School of Art; the Alma Flamenca company; Lucelsy Fernández; Dayán Mirabal and Rocelsy Fernández, to close with the Provincial Concert Band.
An emotional day where many generations of journalists, photographers, designers, proofreaders and support staff for the press converged, all valuable and esteemed for their dedication to work and the search for a higher professional quality.
