Ecological potato planting program advances.

The province of Matanzas has more than 150 hectares dedicated to the cultivation of potatoes with ecological bases, seeds and inputs produced in Cuba.

A program that contributes to food sovereignty and advances in the midst of current difficulties, explained Giraldo Martin, head researcher at the Indio Hatuey Experimental Station of Pastures and Forages.

The organic potato harvest cycle does not exceed 80 days and most of the biological products used for phytoprotection and biofertilization of the tuber are provided by LABIOFAM. Organic matter and earthworm humus are also used for their nutritional contributions.

For better management and pest control, organic potatoes are planted in small farms and today there are more than 130 producers in Cuba who are committed to this crop with yields of more than 15 tons per hectare.

The producers also receive constant advice from specialists of the Indio Hatuey Experimental Station of Pastures and Forage and the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences.

Cuban producers are immersed in one of the most important crops of the cold season: potatoes. The province of Matanzas started the cultivation by the agricultural company Vladimir Ilich Lenin de Jovellanos.
