Life is beautiful.

With her first collection of poems, Milk and Honey, the young Canadian writer Rupi Kaur became world famous in 2014.

Milk and Honey speaks forcefully about overcoming life’s blows and facing what the future holds, however stormy it may be.

Through episodes that talk about topics such as abuse, heartbreak, preconceived ideas about femininity and love for oneself, the author assumes the intention of impacting the reader with verses full of strength in her arguments.

By reading the book it is possible to feel the world that the writer wants to make us see. Her words are felt as her own and the need to transcribe and share them is present. Sadness, despair, bitterness, joy, sympathy, compassion and longing become trains that run through our skin leaving traces in their wake.

It turns out to be what they say: a delicacy, both aesthetically and visually. The hardships and riches are appreciated in the drawings that accompany each writing. All this, intertwined as a single cycle, contains the power to make us connect from the first glance to the long-awaited denouement.

The climax of the story can be appreciated more clearly in the sections where the writer does not hesitate for a second in extolling the figure of the woman, while showering her with adjectives such as: brave, strong, intelligent, extraordinary; besides externalizing the usual evil of seeing the female only as a sex appeal and a hegemonically perfect face.

Milk and Honey implies a beautiful, heartbreaking and very human experience during the course of its reading. Even for those who are not so fond of poetry books and are not familiar with them, this work cannot be passed over and not equally serve as a recommendation.

Despite the circumstances in which it was conceived, this text generated a lot of expectation soon after its publication. One of the lessons it teaches us is that in the face of the unpleasantness of life, we must always try to find the sweetness it brings, because in spite of everything, life is beautiful. And that is Milk and Honey.
