3D technology for health care.

Sponsored by the University of Matanzas, the Center for Advanced and Sustainable Manufacturing Studies (CEFAS) and the Science and Technology Park, a new project is being launched in the territory for the construction of a unit specialized in providing bone and cranial prostheses for the health sector.

The project, although still in the planning stage, intends to take the experience of the studies and results obtained, the technological capacity and the academic capital of the three institutions to meet the demand of the Health sector of the province and the country for prostheses made to measure for the patient by means of 3D modeling and auditory manufacturing.

The bone prostheses made by the new technology save costs and allow a better quality in the operation and recovery process of patients with severe traumatologies, by configuring the pieces with a personalized criterion for the different cases presented.

The research currently being carried out by the director of CEFAS and Doctor in Technical Sciences Ramón Quiza Sardiñas on scaffolds for the regeneration of cellular tissue, based on poly-lactic acid coated with apatites, seeks to follow the previous line. The idea is that by means of a biodegradable material and a minimally invasive operation, the patient will have his fractures healed by the natural capabilities of his own body.
