Social Health Workers raise their voices in Varadero.

Making social work visible in the current context and socializing experiences from Cuba and other countries in the Americas is one of the objectives of the X International Congress of Social Work (Socutras 2023), which is being held in this seaside resort until Friday, June 30th.

At the opening, Dr. Alberto Fernandez Seco, head of the National Department of the Elderly, Social Assistance and Mental Health of the Minsap, expressed how the country includes the social field in primary public health care and the importance of exchanging experiences.

The event, organized by the Cuban Society of Social Health Workers (SOCUTRAS), included speakers from Cuba, Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Chile.

Held at the meeting room of the Arenas Blancas Hotel, in Playa Azul, topics discussed included professional practice in the health system and its impact on the fight against COVID-19; practices that promote respect for human rights, diversity, social equality, dignity and the value of people; and social policy and emerging situations.

Also discussed were the challenges of social work and professional experiences linked to social development and the contribution of sustainable environments.

This congress is sponsored by the Cuban Society of Social Health Workers; the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP); the Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU); the International Federation of Social Workers and the National Council of Scientific Health Societies (CNSCS), among others.
