Sotomayor and a world record not broken for 30 years.

The legendary Matanzas athlete Javier Sotomayor was honored with the Legend Award at the Panam Sports Awards, held recently in the U.S. city of Miami.

Sotomayor, who has held the world record in the high jump since 1993, received this prestigious award for his outstanding career and contribution to the sport.

The former athlete is considered one of the best high jumpers of all time, having won numerous gold medals in international competitions and represented Cuba in multiple Olympic Games. His world record of 2.45 meters remains unsurpassed to this day.

Olympic and world champions, rising stars and the most inspiring performances of the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games were honored at the second edition of the Panam Sports Awards.

In Sotomayor’s case, he was nominated in the Panam Sports Legend category along with other continental sports stars such as Mark Spitz, Thiago Pereira and Felix Sanchez.

During the award ceremony Sotomayor expressed his gratitude and dedicated the award to the athletes who have inspired with their performance in the world of sports. He also stressed the importance of continuing to support the new generations of athletes so that they can achieve their goals and dreams.
