Specialists from the Matanzas Enterprise for Projects of Architecture Works and Engineering (EMPAI) in collaboration with the Electrical National Union undertook a technical checking to the General CalixtoGarcía Bridge also known as Tirry’s Bridge by people from Matanzas.

The inspection is part of a whole technical examination previously carried out to asses the constructive condition of the metallic structure in order to work on a project for its reparation, intended to be presented to the Provincial Direction of Communal Services, which is the institution in charge of these crosswalks upkeep.

In this occasion, the trusses or higher parts of the bridge made up by sections and plates were evaluated. The specialists will study the results of the inspection, but just by looking at it the corrosion in the structure is seen with biggest affectations in the part facing the bay, due to the direct influence of the winds and salt over the shell, said Laura Domínguez, projector of the EMPAI.

Likewise, the damage on the metallic sidewalks was appreciated, which urge a short term repairing to prevent possible accidents. The shortage of hygiene caused by the unaware behavior of the pedestrians that throw down waste on the lower part of its railing is another trouble on the iron structure.

General CalixtoGarcía Bridge is one of the 3 bridges with great heritage value above the San Juan River in Matanzas city along with Sánchez Figueras and the Swiveling Bridge. The Sánchez Figueras Bridge (also known as San Luis Bridge), made of reinforcedconcrete, built 100 years ago, was entirely fixed on the year 2012 and opened to the public again at the beginning of the year 2013.
