The Greater Antilles is constantly threatened by hurricanes, those devastating fearful that feed on the warm waters of the Caribbean. Global warming and the consequent rise in surface temperature are the perfect fuel for the formation of tropical storms and their relatives broader: hurricanes.
Today the eastern part of Cuba faces the dangerous hurricane Matthew with strict compliance and timely measures designed by the National System of Civil Defense, which can significantly lower the impact of these meteorological phenomena, if the battle is won with monitoring and timely prevention.
In our country, the Civil Defense’s main objective is to protect the people and their property, as well as the country’s economy to natural disasters and other types of destructive phenomena. The actions of this body are aimed to educate, prepare and train the population and state agencies for confrontation and risk reduction to such hurricanes.
The island is prepared and creates conditions since the hurricane season, which runs from June 1st until November 30th. Added to this, since 1986 the Civil Defense held annually throughout the exercise Meteoro Cuba, which has the mission to prepare the population and management bodies at all levels in order to face any contingency.
Our country has some advantages that no other and explain the reasons that reduce the risks. These include the organization of the political system; the will and concern of the Communist Party of Cuba and the Government -PCC- front of emergencies; discipline and training of the people and their trust in the authorities; and continuous information media, irrefutable truths that are known internationally.
