From the first months of the revolutionary triumph of 1959 began the aggressions and threats of invasion of the US imperialism against our homeland and the Cuban people was forced to prepare itself for the defense of its territory and of the achieved conquests.
That incipient preparation, when we did not have the experience and the forces we have today, was what enabled us, together with the firm decision of the people, to defeat the mercenary troops in less than 72 hours in the sands of Playa Giron Which invaded our soil in April 1961, despite the military power and support they had from the US government and the Central Intelligence Agency.
In more than five decades the American administrations have maintained and increased their political, ideological and economic aggressions against the Cuban Revolution. An example of this is the cruel and inhuman economic, commercial and financial blockade. For these reasons the country has not stopped paying attention to the defense.
In the early 1980s, before the aggressions of then-President Ronald Reagan, a new Cuban military doctrine emerges that has its essence in the conception of War of the Whole People, which summarizes the historical experience of struggle accumulated by several generations in the Island And is based on the deployment of the Territorial Defensive System, as a basis for its military power, and the most varied use of the forces, means and resources of society and the state.
From then on, the Territorial Troop Militias (MTT) emerged and various forms of preparation for defense were developed, including the Bastion Strategic Exercise, the first being carried out in 1980, then in 1983 and then in 1986, and so on.
The Bastion Exercises and other maneuvers throughout these years have made it possible to constantly raise the cohesion of the Steering and Command Organs, the preparation and combative disposition of the regular troops, their reserves and the people. To this are added the Theater of Military Operations and the perfection of technique, armament and military invulnerability.
