The typical Miguel Failde Orchestra and the Matanzas Chamber Choir will perform during the artistic gala in which cultural personalities, government officials and local politicians and residents will celebrate the 157th anniversary of the proclamation of Matanzas as Athens of Cuba.
The concert hall José White, formerly Artistic and Literary Lyceum, will be the stage for the celebration on the 17th, precisely the date on which, in 1863, Rafael del Villar gave the nickname to the also known as City of Bridges.
The event will be presented for the first time the La Tórtola Distinction, to personalities with significant contributions to the values of Matanzas culture, from the visual arts, theater, dance; Musicians, heritage specialists, the book sector and the House of Culture system, researchers and historians, specified the Provincial Directorate of Culture in the province.
The economic and cultural boom of Matanzas, given the work of so many local artists and their role as the driving force for the development of the country in various spheres, motivated the adoption of the pseudonym that until today accompanies this city.
Protagonist of the opening of Cuba to the world and its modernization, the establishment of important financial, social and cultural bonds with other countries, its innovations favored the advance of the sugar industry and the economic development, transformed the intellectuality and gave prosperity to the Cuban West.
