Matanzas´s producers advance in the potato harvest.

With the collection of 15 thousand 520 tons of potatoes, Matanzas producers have already harvested about half of the areas planned for this 2018-2019 campaign in the province of Matanzas.

The average yield is of 22. 49 tons per hectare exceeds the estimates expected for the current stage, according to Carlos Luis Naranjo Suárez, sub-delegate of Agriculture. Of the 15 productive bases inserted in the harvest, the Basic Unit of Cooperative Production Gispert stands out, in the municipality of Colón, for its high yields.

Despite these results, a humid rot affectation is observed in a percentage of the areas and the National Trucking Company (ENCARGA) failed to comply with what was contracted for this stage, said Carlos Luis Naranjo Suárez.

In the present campaign, 1,500 hectares were planted and the Alberto Delgado Agricultural Production Cooperative was incorporated into the activity.

The harvest of the potato is expected to culminate in the province of Matanzas next April 10th , with the collection of more 33 thousand tons of the tubers.

Due to its excellent soils and favorable climatic conditions in the plain that includes the municipalities of Jovellanos, Perico, Colón, Calimete and Martí, this western territory of Cuba stands out in the planting and harvesting of potatoes.
