The quality of art in the UNEAC gathering

Among testimonies, music and remembrance dances to the painter Francisco Cobo Pérez, the Tertulia de la Matanceridad took place at the  UNEAC  House in Matanzas, where the statement of this non-governmental organization on the events that occurred with the group called San Isidro in  Havana.

In this event, led by the first vice president, Leo Ernesto García Ramos and with Noyla, niece of the beloved painter as a guest, main figures of the plastic arts recalled the work of the considered exponent of the essence of Matanzas, for its colorful landscapes of the city, in addition to marinas and portraits that express the visuality of those who live in this beautiful city of bridges, rivers and sea, in Varadero and its exuberant vegetation.
In the pronouncement of Matanzas artists and writers it is stated that “the provincial Committee of UNEAC repudiates the actions of the so-called San Isidro movement, which constitutes a provocation to our sovereignty and also seeks to legitimize as art the aggression against national symbols, the extreme vulgarity and anti-culture.
“We will maintain the dialogue inspired by our ninth Congress, aware that we still have many battles to fight from the deeply revolutionary commitment that corresponds to the writers and artists of our time.”

Those gathered reached the consensus that the best way to make a Revolution is precisely to provide the people with creations of high artistic and literary quality. Among those who expressed their criteria was the sculptor Agustín Drake, who highlighted the significance of the Matanzas Symphony Orchestra and its antecedents, with reference to the musician and composer Federico Smith, a valued exponent of the Cuban musical avant-garde and, at the same time, a pedagogue « sui generis’.

Drake also revealed anecdotes about the history of Cobo and his pictorial phases within the theme of landscaping, in addition to focusing on the dissemination of his own work.
Painters Jesús Alberto Mederos and Sergio Rufín from Cardenas also expressed their admiration, who spoke about the work of Cobo, a graduate of the San Alejandro school, and in his opinion, endorsed by two transcendent qualities: simplicity and creativity.
Its aesthetic link is linked to a traditional theme with works within the post-impressionist current in the addition of color with the use of the spatula and the use of what is called pointillism.
For his part, Luis Octavio Hernández, highlighted the role of art in shaping aesthetic taste and as a reflection of society, of national feelings. He pointed out that Cuban artists in moments of confrontation in the face of foreign interference unite in a single, creative and firm bundle, inspired by Marti and Fidelista principles.
A large group of artists and writers are present, including Manuel Hernández, Carlos Chacón, Leonel Pérez Orozco, Alfredo Lauzurica, Ana Valdés Portillo, Daneris Fernández, Osmany Betancourt, Mae Roque, Fara Madrigal, Alfredo Zaldívar, Ramón Recondo, Raúl Fidel Cruz, Indira Ramos with musicians from the Symphonic Orchestra, and members of the Maravillas de la Infancia project, accompanied by a culture-loving public.
