Starting this week with an investment of 232 thousand Cuban pesos, the repair of the Héctor Mederos Argüelles Municipal Sports Museum, located in Pedro Betancourt municipality and the only one of its kind in the province, began this week.
«The constructive actions in charge of the EMCOM Sur Base Business Unit include the change of the roof structure, remodeling of the floor with first-rate ceramics and the construction of the bathroom,» explains Manuel Amaya Márquez, investor in the work.
Inaugurated on January 20th, 2008 at the initiative of Ismael García, then president of the Athletes Attention Commission, the museum treasures images, trophies, documents and other objects in an effort to preserve the past. Emilio Morales Álvarez, historian of the museum, points out that it has awards from the basketball player Beatriz Perdomo and Lázaro Ponce, affectionately known as «the nail of handball.» «We have medals from two deceased founders of Inder, Omar Trujillo Tejeda, first regional director of the Voluntary Councils, and José Raúl Álvarez Olivera,» he adds.
Likewise, the data of the Pedro Betancourt League from 1944 to 1960 are zealously preserved, in a territory where founders of national series such as Julio Domínguez, Eladio Abreu, Celestino Fraga, among others, still live. Extensive is the list of champions, whose names top the collections of this museum. The renovation, planned within the day for the 60th anniversary of Inder, must conclude in April on the occasion of the birthday of two of the sporting glories of the municipality.
