In these days when in Cuba and particularly in Matanzas, figures of infected with Covid-19 are shown, unprecedented in the entire time of confrontation with this pandemic that affects the world; it is fair to remember those initial months when we took to the streets or from doorways, rooftops and balconies, to applaud our heroes in white robes.
This was the most sincere and sensitive gesture of gratitude, respect and admiration from this Cuban people to all the Public Health personnel who, at the risk of their own lives, were fighting the disease.
And it is worth remembering because when many of us fatigued by the conditions that must be maintained to avoid contagion and the spread of the virus, we relax and lower our guard to the point of receiving this sharp thrust that the invisible enemy that is the SARS-CoV-2; they, the doctors, nurses, technical and support staff, have stood firm.
They have even renounced the warmth of home, the kiss of their son, defied fatigue and even the limitations they have encountered in this period.
Hence, under current conditions, ensuring that this valuable human capital has a suitable environment in their family and at work to continue dedicating themselves to the work of saving lives is everyone’s job.
“We have to take care of those doctors and nurses. Health personnel have been in a constant fight for more than a year, which wears and has been maintained due to the commitment they have with the health of the people ”.
Words from Dr. José Ángel Portal Miranda, Minister of Health, which summarizes how indebted we are to our doctors, nurses, and technicians.
“And it is not bringing things to them, it is knowing what problems they have at home, with the family or in the doctor’s office, polyclinic, hospital, in short, repaying them for their care.
“Today we have doctors who have young children and we have not offered them an alternative to Take Care Centers or other assistance for their children while they are working … sometimes that doctor and nurse have nowhere to eat lunch, or the quality of what they are offered to eat. It is not the best… ”, explained Portal Miranda.
“We have to find all the solutions with each of the colleagues, solutions that are exact to details that are generally in our hands and we do not handle them properly.” Reasons why the Cuban Minister of Public Health stressed.
“We have to raise the value of health workers who are facing Covid-19 and above all because that recognition in the community is the best payment that those who are in this tough battle have today.”
Coupled with this is the duty of exercising citizen discipline in all settings, caring for and protecting our health and that of family, friends, neighbors and work colleagues. That is the best way to thank them.
