Livestock production in Cuba today does not fully cover the needs and the potentialities of this sphere are not fully exploited, problems that are reflected today in the productive economic plans and on the table of the Cuban men and women.
Currently the indicators do not correspond to the genetic potential of the herd, and there is instability in the workforce and technique.
Added to this is a deterioration of the genetic background, loss of livestock culture, lack of control over resources and insufficient counting of the mass.
In addition to the deterioration of the infrastructure installed for the supply of water, fencing and quartering and excess idle land that can be used for the sowing of animal feed.
Internal problems that are aggravated by the economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba, which limits access to resources and technology.
Against this background, the Ministry of Agriculture adopted, since the beginning of the year, measures in the livestock sector that favor development in the midst of the Cuban economic order.
Unquestionably, efficient livestock production is based on four fundamental pillars: genetics, nutrition, management and health. Precisely these concepts are present in the thought of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, who from the beginning of the Cuban revolutionary process opted for the development of entities such as the Matanzas Genetic Livestock Company.
The livestock development program has the political will, human capital, research centers and germplasm of pastures, forages and protein plants.
