The Company of Architecture and Engineering Projects (EMPAI) has just won the National Quality Award of the Republic of Cuba (PNCRC), an endorsement that prestiges, certifies and honors the efficient management of whoever obtains it.

Es el cuarto PNCRC para la EMPAI desde su primera vez en 1999. Foto: Foto: Tomada del Facebook de la EMPAI.

It’s an award that stirs everything, looks at everything. Internal control, accounting, regulatory compliance, environmental friendliness, occupational health and safety.

The bases and guidelines issued by the National Bureau of Standardization, attached to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, are truly impressive. This does not seem to matter to EMPAI, which was once again exposed to a scrutiny that reviewed it with a clear magnifying glass. Results? For the fourth time it deserves the PNCRC, since its trophy number one in 1999, just when the delivery of the high stimulus began, a merit it shared with Empresa de Teléfonos Celulares de Cuba S.A., CUBACEL.

Then came those of 2008, 2016 and now the one corresponding to the 2022 edition, delivered a little late, but already in its showcase.

This places it among the few Cuban organizations with such a number of awards. In Matanzas it is a record. In the country, an optimal average, only shared by the Havana City Design Company (2003, 2007, 2012 and 2015), according to the quick search made by this writer.

Nobody should think that this is an incentive to perfection, nothing like that, EMPAI director Jorge Luis Hernandez Rodriguez told me. It is the recognition of the work of a collective, of a system of direction and management that allows us to evaluate where we are going, what we want, and how to improve every day.

EMPAI’s triumph reaches a special magnitude if we take into account its weighty opponents such as the Center for Bioactive Chemicals, CBQ, of the Marta Abreu Central University, in Las Villas; the Construction Company of Engineering Works No. 12; the Liliana Dimitrova Horticultural Research Institute and the Ronera San José of the Havana Club International company, in Mayabeque, the other nominees.

Sometimes up to three winners are awarded, this time it was only one. That, I reiterate, elevates the value of this fourth PNCRC to superlative degrees.

EMPAI, its directors, its workers, everyone, should be happy. This is not just any triumph. It is a home run.

The National Quality Award of the Republic of Cuba is the country’s highest recognition to entities that distinguish themselves in obtaining relevant results in the application of total quality management and economic efficiency.

The PNCRC is awarded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment at the proposal of the National Office of Standardization (ONN), which leads the whole process, and is in charge of the convocation and organization of the evaluation process, conducted by a Multidisciplinary Group composed of evaluators from the Cuban Industrial Property Office, Directorate of Environment and Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation of Citma, Ministry of Finance and Prices, National Office for the Control of the Rational Use of Energy and the National Association of Innovators and Rationalizers.

Since its first edition in 1999, it has been conquered by 37 entities, among them the organizations of Matanzas, Meliá Las Américas hotel (2000), Asociación Aguas Varadero (2001 and 2012), Tryp Península Varadero hotel (2004), Empresa de Cítricos Victoria de Girón (2005), and Iberostar Varadero hotel (2017).
