Radio 26 – Matanzas, Cuba

Emisora provincial de Matanzas, Cuba, La Radio de tu Corazón

Idols do not die, they live eternally.

Felix Isasi Mestre is one of the glories of Cuban baseball, I say he is, because although he left us in the last hours towards the Olympus of the Gods, he is like the Palmar de Junco, «a legend that lives».
Since he was a child, he gave all his love to the sport until he became one of the great figures of Cuban and world amateurism.

He always enjoyed the affection of the fans of Matanzas and the country, for his quality as a player, for his modesty and, as he said in an interview with writer Leonardo Padura, «for breaking his soul on the field».
Those of us who had the privilege of knowing him and sharing a stadium as players, from the small categories in his beloved neighborhood of Pueblo Nuevo, can assure that Isasi was already Isasi.

How many beautiful things he lived in baseball, his passion, how many brilliant plays we enjoyed, how many hits decided games for the teams he defended. His famous hidden ball, play of which he is the King in our baseball, has been baptized with his name forever.

Less than 48 hours ago we visited him at his home, located near Palmar de Junco, and although his look was no longer the same as years ago, his smile shone when he mentioned anecdotes of his rich baseball history. That was my last encounter with Floro, as his friends called him. Isasi was an idol and idols never die. He will be talked about forever.
