Renner Rivero: nearly a perfect game.

Only one ticket separated Matanzas pitcher Renner Rivero from having a perfect game on Monday, May 8th, when he pitched the 64th zero-hit, zero-run game in the history of the National Baseball Series.

The game was the third win for the Cocodrilos from Matanzas against the Vegueros from Pinar del Río and, at the same time, the victory in the five-game sub-series with the team from the westernmost of the Cuban provinces.

The Victoria de Girón stadium saw the native of Bermejas, Unión de Reyes, pitch the full nine innings, getting all 27 outs, ten of them via strikeouts. In the top of the fifth inning, Pinar del Río catcher Jorge Yoan Rojas Martínez wrestled his base on balls from Renner Rivero for what would have been a perfect game.

This was also the third such game to take place in the Yumurino park, as well as joining the select list of six pitchers from this province capable of achieving the feat.

For Matanzas it was their fourth win in a row, a streak which has moved them up to second place in the table, level with Santiago de Cuba (22-16), half a game behind leaders Artemisa.
