With 6.5 points out of a possible nine, the International Master (IM) from Holguín, Rider Díaz Murgada won the title of the elite group in the I Chess Tournament 330th Anniversary of the City of Matanzas held at the Louvre Hotel in Matanzas.
His victory in the last round, combined with the draw of another IM and later silver medalist Diasmany Otero, led to the success of the representative of the northeastern province.
«It was an extremely close tournament. The last round decided everything and thus the game becomes more interesting. There is still the zonal qualifier for the National Championship and I hope to put up a fight,» said the newly crowned champion.
In bronze was the Mexican Miguel Tadeo Palma, who achieved his first International Master standard during the event that celebrated the anniversary of the city of rivers and bridges.
«I am very satisfied and happy with this result. In the Capablanca in Memoriam I felt very angry, because my competitor missed the last round and I could not complete the norm. Now the objective has been achieved», said the Aztec competitor.
The best players in the open and under 12 years of age segments were also awarded prizes.
According to the organizers, the event intends to return next year with the aspiration of turning Cuba’s Athens into an obligatory stop in the national circuit of the science game.
