World Diabetes Day is celebrated on November 14th. Dr. Niurka Rodríguez Carvajal, master in infectious diseases and specialist in General Comprehensive Medicine, tells us about the options offered by Public Health to patients suffering from this disease in Matanzas.
The first thing to do is to go to the family doctor’s office, then go to the polyclinics where there are trained clinicians, for example in the Milanés polyclinic there is a consultation of integral attention to the diabetic patient.
There is also the Center for Integral Attention to Diabetic Patients, an extension department of the Faustino Perez provincial hospital located in the Reparto Playa of the head municipality.
The doctor, a graduate in Endocrinology and assistant professor, explains that the essential thing to avoid diabetes and to know how to live with it, once it has been acquired, is prevention, medications help, but the essential thing is to have a healthy lifestyle.
Although data from the 2021 Health Statistical Yearbook place diabetes as the eighth leading cause of death in Cuba, specialists insist on not losing sight of the fact that this condition is a major risk factor for those diseases that are at the top of the list.
