Summer Workshops: A Space for Learning and Conservation (+Photos).

By fostering creativity, sustainable tourism, and conservation, the project has the potential to transform lives and strengthen the social ties of the inhabitants of Cuba’s largest and least populated territory.

The Ciénaga de Zapata, a unique ecosystem in Cuba, will be the setting for an educational and creative initiative this summer.

The community project «Libre Imagen Arte y Conservación» (Free Image Art and Conservation) is hosting several workshops designed for the region’s residents, with the aim of promoting learning and preservation through crafts and folk art, community-based sustainable tourism, and biodiversity conservation.

According to Lázaro Ramón Sosa Morell, project coordinator, the workshops, which begin this Wednesday, are aimed at a select group of thirty beneficiaries, divided into three groups of ten children, adolescents, and young adults from the communities of Pálpite and Mario López.

Crafts and folk art will be one of the program’s most striking themes, where participants will have the opportunity to explore different forms of artistic expression, from visual arts to music and theater.

Instructors such as Susana Guevara Barrero and Lázaro Ramón Sosa Morell, renowned specialists in sociocultural management for development, will guide young talents in discovering and enhancing their creative abilities.

The Community-Based Sustainable Tourism theme will address crucial issues for local economic development, essential for promoting tourism that benefits the community without compromising its resources.

Guided by experts Rosendo Martínez Montero and Oscar Verdeal Carrasco, they will teach attendees about environmental interpretation and the design of tourism products that respect the natural environment.

The third theme is Biodiversity Conservation, which will focus on sustainable practices that protect the rich native heritage of the Zapata Swamp.

Andria Fuentes, a forestry engineer, and Yoandy Bonachea, a conservation worker, will share knowledge on the proper management of endemic and invasive species, as well as landscaping and planning in protected areas.

These workshops represent a valuable opportunity for the residents of Ciénaga de Zapata,  where the goal is not only to teach new skills but also to empower a community facing environmental and economic challenges.

By fostering creativity, sustainable tourism, and conservation, the project has the potential to transform lives and strengthen social ties among the inhabitants of Cuba’s largest and least populated territory.
