The celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the founding of the National Union of Hotel and Tourism Workers (SNTHT) in Matanzas have had the flavor of social responsibility, a distinctive value of this organization since its inception on October 28th, 1995.

That concept enlivened our celebrations, affirmed Yarisleydis Torriente Sánchez, general secretary of the provincial bureau of the SNTHT, proud to lead the members and workers of a sector key to the progress of the Cuban economy.
There has been an enormous response in support of the sanitation efforts in the city of Cárdenas; we have particularly excelled in the cleaning at the Julio Miguel Aristegui Villamil Hospital, with special recognition for several teams, Torriente noted.

He said that, as is tradition, blood donations were paramount, as were donations made to children admitted to the Matanzas Pediatric Hospital, to homes without family support, and to special education schools.
Even before the recovery phase had been declared following Hurricane Melissa’s passage through eastern Cuba, many facilities spontaneously began collecting whatever supplies they could find to help. «Our people are like that, always showing solidarity,» he remarked.
Torriente emphasized that the SNTHT (National Union of Hotel and Tourism Workers) celebrated its founding anniversary with the example of hotels such as Sol Palmeras, the first mixed-use hotel built in Cuba 35 years ago, Royalton Hicacos, Meliá Las Américas, Villa Cuba, Meliá Las Antillas, Starfish Cuatro Palmas, Starfish Varadero, and other outstanding organizations that met the organization’s performance indicators.

He mentioned founders and key figures among union leaders such as Teresita Roosburgh Sotolongo, Estrella Sánchez, José Jesús Máden Machado, Arnaldo Díaz Hiedra, Maritza Soto, and María Caridad Rodríguez—a veritable all-star group of veteran union leaders from Matanzas, those who serve as a reminder that the organization still exists in the minds, hearts, and daily work of these men and women. Fortunately, he added, there are many more, both long-serving and young, graduates of their school.

Torriente assured that the celebrations for the occasion will continue until October of next year, with the primary goal of improving union work so that quality and efficiency are always present in the daily operations of hotel and other establishments. Photos: By the Author.
