The Cocomar, friends of nature project, which is based at the Francisco Vega Alemán elementary school in the Yumurina community of La Playa, seeks to manage knowledge through educational actions that stimulate research and promote healthy lifestyles in the children of this institution.

Maribel Delgado López, general coordinator of the group, commented on the creation of Cocomar.

«After a diagnosis in the community, we detected the deterioration of the hygienic-sanitary conditions as a problem. We focused on the deficient environmental culture that existed in some people. After analyzing this situation, we considered that it was more effective to carry out environmental education actions in the local elementary school, since children, when they enter school, expand their circle of socialization and it is an opportune moment to teach them how to live better in harmony with the environment. The project has children acting as promoters of environmental health and good conservation habits.»

Rachel Medina Fleites, a pioneer member of the group, tells us about their activities.

One of the fundamental actions carried out by the members of Cocomar is the promotion and realization of eco bricks, which consist of compacting solid waste in plastic containers, in order to reduce pollution.
