Matanzas Population Among the Oldest in the Nation.
The province of Matanzas maintains an upward trend in aging, with a significant proportion of elderly people in its population structure.

Population aging is a global phenomenon with visible effects in Cuba. In the country, the proportion of people aged 60 and over increased from 19 percent in 2015 to 25 percent in 2024.
The most recent report from the National Office of Statistics and Information shows that the Cuban population has reached 9,748,000 inhabitants, of whom more than a quarter belong to this age group, making Cuba the oldest nation in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In the territorial analysis, the population over 60 years of age grew in both urban and rural areas.
The province of Matanzas maintains an upward trend in aging, with a significant proportion of older people in its population structure.
In general, all provinces show increases, with Villa Clara leading the country.
The national aging index closed 2024 with 1,625 older people for every 1,000 children and young people aged zero to fourteen.
In the case of Matanzas, this indicator confirms the predominance of the population aged 60 and over compared to the child population, a behavior that is repeated in most of the national territory.
