212 years of Cartagena’s independence celebrated in Pedro Betancourt (+audios)

The workers of the Gustavo González Pérez bookstore and the Manuel Navarro Luna library of Pedro Betancourt municipality dedicated a literary panel to the Independence Day of Cartagena de Indias, on its 212th anniversary.

Among the topics addressed in the exchange were renowned celebrations such as the carnival of Barranquilla, the vast literary legacy of Colombia, promoted by writers of the stature of José Eustasio Rivera and Gabriel García Márquez, as well as other elements of the history, customs and cultural traditions of this South American nation. Demetrio Elizalde Sotomayor, retired from the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television and one of the organizers of the event, told our radio station.

For her part, Lianet Fundora Armas, a journalist from the Girón publishing house, pointed out the literary and journalistic work of García Márquez and his eternal friendship with the largest of the Antilles.

The Independence Day of Cartagena de Indias is celebrated every November 11 and is a day of festivity for this territory, which became the first in present-day Colombia to declare its full independence from the Spanish crown and the second in South America, after Caracas, Venezuela.
