Lenin Company to expand irrigated agriculture promotion
Planting a quadrant with rustic crops in the areas corresponding to the 34 central pivot irrigation machines that the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Agricultural Enterprise has, is a task underway during the current cold season in that entity.
Carlos Alberto Fierro Abreu, who recently assumed the responsibility of general director of the company, explained that the strategy will expand the diversity of foods to be harvested and will comply with a governmental agreement in the province.
Fierro Abreu said that during the current cold season they will assume a planting plan of 2,402 hectares (ha) until next February, of which 1,080 will be under irrigation; however, of the 34 central pivot machines that the company has, seven have problems related to electrical transformers, but they hope they will be solved.
He also specified that 194 ha of potato, 650 ha of beans, 380 ha of corn, 352 ha of cassava and 265 ha of pumpkin will be planted; other crops to be promoted will be sweet potato, malanga, onion, garlic, bell pepper, cucumber, melon, cabbage, beet, carrot, coconut, mango, guava, pump fruit and pineapple.
At the end of last September the planting plan was 101 percent fulfilled, in October we depend on the availability of fuel and although the country is going through a complex moment due to the lack of this resource, the month is just beginning and we are not giving up to achieve what we had planned, he said.
Pedro Leonel Benítez González, usufructuary responsible for the central pivot irrigation Machine 23, commented that he has already fulfilled his planting plan for the cold season, with 10 hectares of sweet potato, 10 of cassava and 20 of beans, he is currently focused on the cultural attentions.
The Vladimir Ilich Lenin Agricultural Enterprise is one of the most important in the province of Matanzas due to its responsibility in food production; after a spring campaign in which it did not achieve the results it set out to achieve, it is in a process of renovation with a view to recovery.
