Radio 26 – Matanzas, Cuba

Emisora provincial de Matanzas, Cuba, La Radio de tu Corazón

Radio Ciudad Bandera and the First Week of Cardenense Culture.

The two titles that most distinguish this city of Matanzas are that of Flag City, for the hoisting of our National Flag in its main square on May 19th, 1850, for the first time in Cuba, and that of the City of First Fruits, for the different
events that initially took place there.

In these days of pleasant memories for the 50th anniversary of the First Week of Culture of Cardenal and the country, developed between the first and eighth of March 1975, we cannot fail to mention the work of the collective of Radio Ciudad Bandera, in support of the new local scoop.

This station, known as the oldest active station of the Cuban Radio, dedicated a special programming, directed mainly to highlight the wide cultural movement that took place during those days in all the neighborhoods of the city and as a tribute to the founding date of the city, which occurred on March 8th, 1828.

From the beginning of the activities with the Diana Mambisa, to the farewell of the plant with the notes of our National Anthem, the Cardenas radio achieved the greatest informative coverage in its history.

In the informative department from very early in the morning the tireless Felipe Martínez Morgan and Santiago Ramón Ramírez Frías were ready to write the first events of the cultural programming, without forgetting the experienced Roberto Bueno Castán, Argilio Rodríguez G. or Sergio Amarante; who without leaving their functions in the Organizing Committee of the Week, as good journalists, left their chronicles of what was lived each day.

The work of the operators, Carlos Martínez Poey or Pedro Arteaga Chic, at the remote controls and that of the announcers Darío Vila, Máximo Velázquez, Ricardo Medina, Carlos Cepero or Mercy Febles, both in the small central booth of the radio station or in the activities transmitted from theaters or theaters of the city, was also very important.

For me, then a novice in radio work, it was an unforgettable experience, mainly because of the variety of journalistic genres used in the different spaces and the practical application of the technique of voice-over.

Many times people write about the importance of that first Cardenense Culture Week, later extended to the rest of the country, or mention the people who contributed the most to its creation, but little is said about the support work of Radio Ciudad Bandera, crucial for the success of the most important cultural commemoration of the municipality and which coincidentally takes place within the Cuban Press Day in which tribute is paid to groups and workers of the country’s media.
