Byrne, the poet of the flag.

Bonifacio Byrne Puñales was born on March 3rd, 1861 in Matanzas. On the 163rd anniversary of his birth, it is appropriate to remember his contributions to national culture.

Considered one of the great exponents of Cuban poetry and literature, Byrne was characterized by his deep lyrical sensitivity and his commitment to the island’s independence cause.

At the age of 29 he founded the newspapers La Mañana and La Juventud Liberal. In 1896 he emigrated to the United States for political reasons when he published sonnets on the occasion of the execution of Domingo Mujica.

Once in exile he dedicated himself to separatist work and created the Revolutionary Club. He also collaborated with the newspapers Patria, El Porvenir and El Expedicionario.

His poetry reflects a deep connection with nature, homeland and freedom.

The poem Mi Bandera can be catalogued as one of Byrne’s most famous poems. He wrote it when he arrived in Havana from exile in 1899 and saw the American flag flying next to the Cuban flag. In 1915 he was declared Eminent Son of Matanzas.

Bonifacio Byrne passed away on July 5th, 1936, but his work continues more latent than ever. His poetic legacy lives on in the collective memory of Cuba and in the hearts of those who value poetry as a form of artistic expression.
