In the presence of Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the Republic, members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) paid tribute today to the figure of General Máximo Gómez Baéz on the occasion of the 118th anniversary of his death.
The political act and the military ceremony were also accompanied by Army Corps General Ramón Espinosa Martín, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Party and First Deputy Minister FAR, and other leaders of the Party, the government, the Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior.
In front of the tomb of the distinguished patriot a wreath was laid on behalf of the Cuban people who distinguish in the Dominican fighter one of the highest exponents of internationalist participation in the different stages of the historical process for the liberation of the Island.

In the central words of the tribute, Major General Eugenio Rabilero Aguilera, second in command of the General Staff and head of the Directorate of Operations of the FAR, highlighted the attitudes and tactical genius of Máximo Gómez expressed in the victorious combat actions led by him, in most cases in inferiority of numbers and in the preparation of the troops.
He pointed out that his methods, audacity and use of the battlefield are the subject of study in the Academies of the Armed Forces, some of them named after him, and constitute indispensable elements of the Cuban military doctrine.
At a time when U.S. imperialism is intensifying its hostile policy against the largest of the Antilles and the Latin American region, the figure of the Generalissimo stands as a reference in defense of the conquered sovereignty and with the teaching of achieving freedom at the price of any sacrifice, he added.
Born in Bani, Dominican Republic, Máximo Gómez Baéz joined the independence struggle a few days after the beginning of the Ten Years’ War, in the course of which, thanks to his brilliant tactics and the first use of the machete as a fearsome fighting weapon, he reached the rank of Major General of the Liberation Army.
Together with José Martí and other patriots, he was one of the main organizers of the Necessary War, elected General in Chief of the Revolutionary troops, and during the war he led several important campaigns such as the Invasion to the West, the Circular Campaign and the Launching Campaign.
He died on June 17th, 1905 in Havana with the admiration and respect of the Cuban people, earned in years of dedication and battle for the triumph of the emancipation cause.
