Port of Matanzas diversifies services portfolio.

The port is trying to apply variants and continue growing in options in a site affected in the export of sugar, due to the low production levels of an item that since 2018 does not leave through its docks to other latitudes.

The possibility of operating as a subsidiary company opened a new horizon for the port of this western province of Matanzas, an advantage that makes it possible to diversify its portfolio of services, greater autonomy in its performance and improved income for the State and its workers.

Subordinated to the Western Maritime Port Services Company (SEPOC), which belongs to the Grupo Empresarial de Transporte Marítimo Portuario (GEMAR), the new status came to the rescue of this maritime terminal, a key link in the economy of any country, especially if it is an archipelago, said Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila, head of the Ministry of Transportation (MITRANS).

Rodríguez Dávila’s Facebook page mentions some of the services in force, among which are the collection of residuals from ships transporting fuels that arrive at the port’s berths, those associated with shipping and storage companies, where they have been able to increase their rates thanks to the implementation of an investment process.

The director, Lázaro Biart Licerna, explained that although there is low activity in the main task, which is the service of loading and unloading ships, they have resorted to alternatives such as the rental of labor force, to the chapea, to serve water to the ships, in addition to the income produced by the ships for the right to berth.

Biart announced that they are preparing to move with sulfur, an operation that he described as ‘noble’ because it requires few personnel and generates good income, and they also aspire to be able to export sulfuric acid.

With an extension of 1.85 km2, the port is trying to apply variants to optimize its capacities and continue growing in options in a site affected, for example, in the export of sugar, due to the low productive levels of an item that since 2018 does not leave through its docks to other latitudes.
