Bestiario, el gesto infinito (Bestiary, the infinite gesture) is the exhibition with which, this Tuesday afternoon, the celebrations for the fifteen years of professional career of the artist Adrián Gómez Sancho began at the Esquerré gallery.

A dialogue based on symbols and meanings is established between the works of Sancho and Rafael Zarza, said curator, editor and art critic Carina Pino Santos Navarro.

«Bestiario, el gesto infinito (Bestiary, the infinite gesture) is the exhibition with which, this Tuesday afternoon, the celebrations for the fifteen years of professional career of Cardenas artist Adrián Gómez Sancho began at the Esquerré gallery».

«This exhibition begins the celebrations for these fifteen years that have marked my career since I graduated in 2009. It contains 16 works in small, medium and large format, 12 of them new for this exhibition, in which I have the tremendous privilege of sharing with Rafael Zarza, National Plastic Arts Award 2020.

«In the exhibition you can appreciate different techniques, what the public is used to with respect to my work, including of course the iconography of these bullfighting characters in which the bestiary is reflected, playing at the same time with inquiries of the human figure».

Obras de Rafael Zarza incluidas en la exposicion de Adrian Gomez Sancho

Works by Rafael Zarza included in the exhibition by Adrian Gomez Sancho

A dialogue based on symbols and meanings is established between the works of Sancho and Rafael Zarza, guest of honor at the exhibition with three lithographs, each one with his own imaginary and that have much to do with the Cuban context, said curator, editor and art critic Carina Pino Santos Navarro during the inauguration.

Argel Calcines, general editor of Opus Habana magazine, said that Cuba’s artistic vanguard today is in Matanzas.

«In the exhibition Sancho seeks to highlight a life and professional trajectory. He has invited a major artist, National Prize of Plastic Arts, whose work has a thematic axis that is bullfighting, the theme of the bull and the myths around it, plus he works a lot at a symbolic level with those meanings that have a seat in the history of art.

«The work exhibited in this gallery is also an invocation through specific imaginary creatures that Adrian has dreamed of and from which he has been inspired to create. It has to do with another concept of bestiary, unlike Zarza’s, although both establish a subtle dialogue, this one speaks to us of contexts in which we live today, of crisis, complex, in which the artist is able to suggest some bridges that link with our realities from his own creations.»

Bestiario, el gesto infinito (Bestiary, the infinite gesture) will remain on display at the Esquerré Gallery until June 7th.

In the words to the catalog, designed by creator Claudia Padron, Santos Navarro highlights the inspiration the artist found in the art of antiquity, without formal reductionism or unnecessary quotations and in today’s Cuban society, which the author of the exhibition corroborated.

«I get a lot of inspiration from today’s Cuban society, in these difficult times, and I take that theme to my art, whether in painting, drawing, engraving, sculpture or installation. Although there are some monotypes, in this case the pictorial predominates.

«I start from cave iconography and lead these characters to my way of being, to my style that I am very grateful that people are already recognizing it, and it is a tremendous pride that they can interact directly with what I do».

Beyond the very genesis of the exhibition, much has to do with its essence, which has been the very spirit of Sancho’s work for more than a decade, the subtitle that accompanies these pieces.

The infinite gesture refers to an insatiable search for new pictorial discourses and characters and the renewed motivations that drive the artist to always go for more, says Gómez Sancho.

«The gesture of doing and not stopping also leads to infinity. To have that gesture of creation from the pictorial, to be always involved not only in personal exhibitions but also in collective ones, I think it takes us further. As Picasso would say, may the muses surprise me at work.

«In 2019 the exhibition Intimate Nature marks a milestone in my work, starting from these same cave characters, an iconography closer to the caves with giraffes, buffaloes and man. It is the history of art from its beginnings to contemporaneity».
