Strategies in the growth and development of the Botanical Garden of the University of Matanzas.
The transformation of green spaces at the University of Matanzas into collection areas, as part of its arborization, is part of the growth and development strategy currently being consolidated by the Botanical Garden of the University of Matanzas.
Antonio Delgado Perdomo, head of department of the Botanical Garden at that institution, stated that among the actions they carry out is the maintenance and incorporation of new species.
Some of the projects in that sense are the creation of the collection of «palmetum» and the conformation of a group of colonies that form the collection of the characteristic vegetation of the coastal strip of Matanzas.
Among the initiatives in the production process is the creation of rustic cultivation houses. And to prevent theft in this area, the initiative was taken to innovate with the traditional peasant culture in the creation of the garden’s palisade.
The tour services continue to be carried out and the visit of foreign delegations made it possible to establish agreements for the exchange of knowledge and materials.
Another of the proposals for environmental education work in the Children’s Circles is the use of recreational resources, while for the elderly it is aimed at the use of medicinal and aromatic plants.
The Botanical Garden of the University of Matanzas, since its creation, contributes to the conservation of the biodiversity of the local flora and to raise the environmental culture of students, teachers and visitors.
