World Equal Opportunity Week Celebrated in Matanzas (+photos).
The main purpose of the World Equal Opportunity Week, which will be held in Matanzas and throughout Cuba until December 3rd, is to make society aware of the interests, rights, needs and potential of people with disabilities.
As in previous years, the members and directors of the Associations of the Physically and Motor Disabled, the Blind, the Deaf and the recently created organization ACPDI, which represents people with intellectual disabilities and their families, are carrying out the usual day with different activities and initiatives.
Exchanges with entities and economic actors that support the welfare and social inclusion of this population segment, as well as cultural, artistic, sports and recreational meetings, are some of the actions that will take place until next Sunday in each locality of Matanzas.
The Day, traditionally celebrated in Cuba by members of ANCI, ANSOC and ACLIFIM, precedes the International Day of Persons with Disabilities instituted by the National Assembly of the United Nations in order to promote their comprehensive rehabilitation and social inclusion to achieve greater rights and opportunities.
In 2023, the date proclaimed by the UN is commemorated under the slogan: United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for, with and by people with disabilities.
While informing Radio 26 about the actions conceived by the National Association of the Blind of Matanzas territory in salute to the anniversary, Ramón Thiers Pérez, provincial president of the organization, called for the sensitivity of the population and state institutions to the material needs and the psychological and emotional support required by people with visual, physical-motor, hearing and intellectual limitations so that they can achieve their goals and aspirations to be socially useful.
Likewise, he ratified the commitment to guarantee inclusive mobility and the full exercise of the rights of this population sector.
